Community Plugins.

Fostering collaborations and social cohesion in neighborhoods

The Project

Community Plugins is a collaborative workshop between students from MEATS, Elisava (Barcelona) and Balwant Sheth School of Architecture (Mumbai) under the direction of Toni Montes, Roger Paez, Atrey Chhaya and Bhsvleen Kaur. Its goal is to design and create, through two stages of work, a prototypical intervention in the Raval quarter of Barcelona, using micro-architecture as civic infrastructure to articulate informal, organic, self-managed programs to foster collaborations and social cohesion throughout the people of the district.

The workload was divided into three stages.

Stage 1: Research

The Mumbai Students provided information and cards of programmatic exploration of informal, organic and self-managed dynamics of neighborhood collaborations in Mumbai. The Barcelona students provided a socio-spatial framework and opportunity spaces in the Raval district to adapt and implement a collaborative dynamic in the space.

Stage 2: Prototype

Through a five day workshop, the two groups of students used the research and material previously worked on to build a large scale model of the neighborhood, and implement different solutions to the present opportunities for social cohesion.

Stage 3: Demolition

The inevitable thing in every temporary project, is its deconstruction facet.
